Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a crucial subject for engineering students, especially those pursuing a degree in mechanical or civil engineering. The subject deals with the evaluation of materials and components without causing any damage to them. Kerala Technical University (KTU) offers NDT as a part of its 2019 schema for the seventh semester. The subject is divided into six modules, each covering a specific aspect of NDT.
Module 1 focuses on the basics of NDT, including the principles, advantages, and limitations of various techniques. Module 2 covers ultrasonic testing, which involves the use of high-frequency sound waves to detect flaws in materials. Module 3 deals with radiographic testing, which uses X-rays or gamma rays to examine the internal structure of materials. Module 4 covers eddy current testing, which is used to detect surface and sub-surface defects in conductive materials. Module 5 deals with magnetic particle testing, which is used to detect surface and sub-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials. Finally, module 6 covers visual testing, which involves the use of visual aids to detect surface defects in materials.
By the end of the course, students will have a thorough understanding of the various NDT techniques and their applications. They will also learn how to interpret the results of NDT tests and make informed decisions based on them
